The MAINFRAME Computers for companies like Compugraphics before tabletop units were conceived was a great opportunity to learn allot of basics of structural steel framed and sheet metal paneled enclosure designs.
I actually got my start in the electronics field with cable and harness designs. We also designed the circuit board racks with cooling fan enclosures. I added a hinge to one side and brought the wiring harness in from that side so the rack could just swing out for rear access to the fans and circuit board connectors. From there I even got to do some designs for their New Product Research and Development.
Compugraphics hired an outsourced industrial designer to critique my work only for my first exterior design and he was very complimentary and encouraging to further my carrier by adding Industrial Designing to my skills.
